# HUGO (Hermann). DE MILITIA EQUESTRI ANTIQUA ET NOVA. - Lot 103
# HUGO (Hermann). DE MILITIA EQUESTRI ANTIQUA ET NOVA. Antwerp, ex officina Plantiniana, Balthasar Moretus, 1630, in folio of [8]-344-[10] pages, stiff vellum (contemporary binding). First edition. "The work is, with those of Walhausen, Basta, and Melzo, among the first to establish fairly precise rules for the use and handling of cavalry. It is sought after and quite rare. These figures represent tactical formations, offensive and defensive, of the cavalry. As in the tactical works of this period, each cavalryman is represented individually and some plates contain more than a thousand of them. All of them are remarkable for the finesse of the drawing and the engraving and can be attributed to Corneille Galle. (Mennessier de La Lance I, 652). The illustration consists of a beautiful title-frontispiece by Cornelius Galle, 29 FIGURES IN THE TEXT, 4 OF WHICH ARE FULL PAGE AND 5 DOUBLE PAGE OFF-TEXT PLATES (of 6). Damage to binding with missing parts, wear, marginal wormholes on many leaves, foxing, handwritten annotations in margins.
