Persia, Egypt, India ... the arts of these distant lands have had a deep imprint on the Cartier style, as the recent exhibition "Cartier and the Arts of Islam" in Paris at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs has magnificently shown. A great collector of objects, manuscripts, jewelry, illuminations, textiles, miniatures, and bookbindings, Jacques Cartier drew his inspiration for his jewelry creations from these ancient Eastern arts.
He borrowed forms, motifs and graphic lines, thus softening the radical geometric style of Art Deco of the time, characterized by the straight line.
The lapel clip presented here testifies to this inclination. The soft and subtle curves of the jewel, the lines of baguette diamonds as well as the asymmetry of the motif refer to both the Egyptian and Persian graphic repertoire.
