Double Soumak bag, Southeast Caucasus, circa 1900 - Lot 219
Double Soumak bag, Southeast Caucasus, circa 1900 It is decorated with two squares enhanced by a large polychrome octagon on a navy blue background with small geometric floral motifs. They are framed by a wide border of wine lees with geometric decoration. H. 230 cm - L. 152 cm AC Soumak would come from the name of the ancient capital of the Khanate of Chirvan: Shemakha. However, the origin of this carpet is rather attributed to the region of Kuba or Dagestan. Carpets from the surrounding regions were in fact sold in the Shemakha bazaar. This name could also come from the red color, often dominant in Soumak, obtained from the berries of the shrub of the same name. The Soumak technique differs from the technique of other kilims: in the weaving of a soumak, there is an alternation between a passage of colored weft through the plain warp threads and a winding of additional weft threads around the warp threads, thus forming the decoration and a stronger embroidered look.
