JAPAN, 19th century - Lot 97
JAPAN, 19th century Ivory netsuke representing a hare in the clouds, leaning against the full moon and holding a pestle, the eyes inlaid with blonde horn, signed Masahiro (Osaka). Gerces. H. 2.5 cm LM Provenance: Yamato Gallery, Paris, 2001. Collection of Mr. L. Comparative bibliography : Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz, "Netsuke, die sammlung Trumpf," Vol. 2, No. 219, p. 131. The pestle is an allusion to the mortar of the moon hare in which he prepares mochi, but here he holds the pestle like a bunch of horsetails with which he was thought to polish the surface of the moon.
