This bust of Saint Louis as a child is part of a series of historicist busts made by the Lyon sculptor Jean-Joseph Carriès in the 1880s. In this set, we find portraits of personalities of the last centuries, among which the poetess Louise Labé and the painters Velasquez or Frans Hals. With its distressed expression, its irregular cut, the meticulous work of the plaster and the patina with subtle brown tones, this head of the young king announces the heads of the "Desolate" by the artist.
