SPANISH school, probably Andalusia, second half of the 17th - Lot 67
SPANISH school, probably Andalusia, second half of the 17th century Saint Anthony abbot 1668 or 1669 Polychromed wood round-body with "a estofado" decoration Partially illegible inscription '...Major...Gonçalez?' on the base in front and bears a date on the side 166 ?(8 or 9) H. 143 cm AL-EJ Head brought back later and detachable, small accidents This sculpture with a remarkable costume represents Saint Anthony abbot. The tau on the scapular identifies him as the patron saint of the hospitable Antonine order, which enjoyed a very popular cult in medieval and modern times because of his thaumaturgical powers. Famous artists of the Andalusian school, such as Antonio Ruiz Gijon (1653-1705), depicted him with great expressiveness and dressed in luxurious and grandiose fabrics (Saint Anthony Abbot, polychrome wood sculpture with estofado decoration, 1676, H. 170 cm, Convent of Saint Anthony Abbot, Seville). The saint's robe is covered with a repeated pattern of gilded acanthus leaves made using the "a estofado" technique. Pale pink and yellow flowers intermingle with delicate leaves in a cameo of green. Like a three-dimensional painting, our work reminds us that the success of Spanish wooden statuary in the seventeenth century stems from the joint work of a sculptor and a painter whose name is rarely known.
