School of VALLADOLID, entourage of Juan de Anchieta (1540-15 - Lot 66
School of VALLADOLID, entourage of Juan de Anchieta (1540-1588), third third of the 16th century The Virgin and Saint John of Calvary Pair of resinous panels carved in bas-relief, with painted background and polychromed clothes with 'a estofado' decoration H. 139 cm L. 66 cm and H. 141 cm L. 63 cm AL-EJ Accidents, lacks, and restorations These two painted panels depicting the Virgin and Saint John originally accompanied a central panel depicting the Crucifixion. This scene, a glorious composition from the medieval period, adorned the top of the huge Spanish altarpieces throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. These altarpieces, a particularity of the Spanish school, intimately combine sculpture and painting. The background is entirely painted, subtly representing Mount Golgotha at dusk, and the polychromy of the vestments, of extreme richness, reinforces the volume of the figures of the Virgin of Sorrows and Saint John. The representation of St. John in profile, the treatment and the enveloping volume of the clothes, the delicate detail of the anatomy of the protagonists, especially their hands, translate the assimilation and the transition to a purely Spanish Renaissance style diffused by the School of Valladolid. Our work is related to the production of the artist Juan de Anchieta (1533-1588), trained in Valladolid and strongly influenced by the Roman mannerism of Michelangelo and the models established by Alonso Berruguete and Juan de Juni. The Virgin and St. John of Calvary in the main altarpiece in Simancas come to mind. This artist regularly executes his figures in profile, like this Saint John. The treatment of the drape around John is similar to that of his Moses in the church of San Miguel in Vitoria. The contrite pout of our Virgin is reminiscent of the expression of the Virgin of the Candelabra in the parish church of Santiago in Valladolid. Finally, the richness of the polychromy and the rather synthetic "a estafado" motifs are similar to those of the mantle of St. Dominic of Guzmán located on the altarpiece of the Chapel of the Alderete in San Antolin de Tordesillas.
