Southern ITALY, XIIIth century - Lot 65
Southern ITALY, XIIIth century Horse Decorative element carved in relief in marble H. 52 cm W. 55 cm, with base H. 57 cm AL-EJ Traces of erosion and residue from long-term outdoor exposure This decorative element, which was intended to adorn the external part of a building, bears witness to the intense circulation of forms and ideas in 13th century Italy, initiated with the reign of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, Emperor of the Holy German Empire, King of Provence-Burgundy, Sicily and Jerusalem. The representation in profile and the stylized mane indicate influences from the Eastern world, notably from the Byzantine and Seljuk empires.
