Auguste BACHELIN (1830 -1890) - Lot 18
Auguste BACHELIN (1830 -1890) "Prehistoric times - Lake village on the lake of Neuchâtel (Switzerland)". Graphite lead and traces of gouache, signed and titled at the bottom in ink, annotated on the reverse with instructions to the engraver. H. 17 cm - L. 26,5 cm HVS Traces of vertical folds Bibliography : Collective, "La Mosaïque," Paris, bureaux de la Mosaïque, 5th year, 1877, p. 49 (repr.). The Swiss Federal Council commissioned the artist to create a large composition representing a Bronze Age lake village for the decoration of the prehistoric antiquities rooms at the 1867 Paris World Fair. The work is currently kept in the National Museum of Zurich (inv. N° LM 30487). Our drawing takes up the famous composition for publication in 1877 in the magazine "La Mosaïque" as the annotations on the reverse side testify. The discovery in the middle of the 19th century of traces of lake dwellings on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel gave rise to numerous reconstructions, such as Bachelin's dream composition in which, in the foreground, Phoenician merchants exchange goods with the first inhabitants of Switzerland.
