Suite of four flat-backed armchairs with... - Lot 195 - De Baecque et Associés
Suite of four flat-backed armchairs with carved and gilded beechwood frames, decorated with foliage, flowers, clasps and scrolls, the trapezoidal seat resting on curved legs; recessed mark LP (crowned); (gilding of later period) Stamped by Jean-Baptiste TILLIARD, carpenter received master in 1752 Louis XV period H: 98 cm - W: 70 cm PFD Provenance : Former collection of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans (1873-1850), king of the French in 1830. Six armchairs and a shepherdess from the same set were once part of the collection of the perfumer François Coty (1874-1934) and appear in his sale in Paris, November 30 and December 1, 1936, lot 76. The photographs in the catalog allow us to distinguish the smallest details of the sculpture of the seats, which were both painted and gilded at the time (see illustration). The same wraparound armrests and inwardly curving legs are found, as well as a belt whose continuity is broken by two clasps on either side of the central motif; the rear legs are also very elegantly done in the continuation of the belt line. The abundance of the sculpted decoration is also identical on the bergère with very small differences, notably in the ornaments of the feet. It punctuates the architecture of these armchairs at the junction points, notably at the shoulders, at the backrest supports and at the birth of the armrest console, but also fills the void in the center of the lower crosspiece of the backrest. Very characteristic of the style of Jean-Baptiste Tilliard in the years 1765-1770, these seats are to be compared with a set of armchairs, chairs and sofa that belonged to the Akram Ojjeh collection (Sotheby's Monaco sale on June 25, 1979, lot 54, illustrated in B.G.B. Pallot, L'Art du siège au XVIIIe siècle en France, Paris, 1987, p. 206-207). This furniture stamped by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard shows great similarities with the decoration of the chairs presented, in particular the two flowers at the top of the legs surmounting a v-shaped foliage.
