Dimitri VARBANESCO (1907-1963) - Lot 189
Dimitri VARBANESCO (1907-1963) Man with bird's head, 1934 Ink and gouache, signed, dated and dedicated to Andry Farcy, lower right H. 28 cm - W. 21 cm Andry Farcy (1882-1950), a fascinating character, painter, journalist, draughtsman, creator of posters for advertising, critic, always close to the avant-garde, became curator of the Grenoble Museum in 1919, a position he held until 1949. Through bold and original acquisitions (the Agutte-Sembat bequest, paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Bonnard, etc.) and the organization of ambitious exhibitions devoid of all ideas of consensus or seduction, he made this modest provincial museum the first in France for modern art, which earned him European recognition. The Grenoble Museum paid tribute to him in 2019 with an exhibition entitled Homage to Andry Farcy, an avant-garde curator, recalling one of his phrases, pronounced at the inauguration of the museum's redevelopment in 1921: "It is better to stammer about emerging truths than to assert with ease truths conquered by our elders.
