CHINA - Southern Song period, late 13th century - Lot 218
CHINA - Southern Song period, late 13th century Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, or Guanyin Large lacquered wood subject on fabric, with polychrome decoration on an old gold background. Guanyin is represented here standing on a lotus flower base, her right leg slightly bent forward, her pelvis wiggling underlined by a highly developed belt knot, her bust adorned with a Tang-style Buddhist necklace and girded with a monastic robe descending in ribbons to the bottom of her feet. The right arm is extended towards the earth, while the left arm is bent to perform the sign of the Buddhist teaching. His serene face with protruding palms and a small chin reveals the Urna in the center of his forehead, perhaps formerly encrusted with a rock crystal bead. The half-closed eyes are encrusted with sulphur. She wears a headdress with a high spiral bun, topped on the front with a representation of a Bodhisattva sitting among the clouds, her hair falling over her ears and shoulders. H. 164 cm Accidents (fingers), missing parts, paint chips Provenance: collection of a former antique dealer, Isère department.
