Karabagh carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), Caucasus, ca. 18 - Lot 454
Karabagh carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), Caucasus, ca. 1880 2.50 x 1.40 m AC "Karabagh means "black garden" and refers to a region that extends into the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important weaving centre, with the creation of numerous factories, from the 17th century onwards under the impulse of Muslim and Christian craftsmen. During the 19th century, carpets were produced there with European-style roses and according to French cartoons. "The presence of populations of Kurdish and Armenian origins located especially around Shusha in the South Caucasus (), contributed to the diffusion of Karabagh carpet weaving. Karabagh carpets have a very diversified decoration. There are three types: - Small prayer carpet decorated with a mihrab in the shape of an arrowhead and decorated with multicolored stripes, botehs or Persian-inspired floral designs. - A long carpet decorated with stylised botehs, palmettes, bunches of roses and mina khani motifs (composed of large rounded flowers resembling daisies linked by stems). This motif is probably a Kurdish interpretation of the herati motif) or herati on a dark blue or red background. - This carpet is decorated with a series of central hexagonal medallions with a white zigzag outline. This carpet is decorated with a large double central cartouche in ivory and red and another in red and blue-green on a navy blue background with polychrome geometric motifs and a red counter-ground. A narrow blue-green border with a succession of polychrome stars surrounds the composition. Slight wear
