Bukhara Tekké carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), Turkmenista - Lot 452
Bukhara Tekké carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), Turkmenistan, circa 1900 3.60 x 2.60 m AC "The Turkmen, originally from the distant steppes of Asia, were composed of different tribes, the main ones being the Salor, Tekké, Yemouth, and Saryk. Nomads and semi-nomads living in a round tent (yurt) with hoops, carpet making was essential for their daily life and their festivals and was an integral part of their tribal tradition. Most carpets have a distinct function, which we will discuss later, and were part of the bride's obligatory dowry. Women were responsible for making them, as the dyeing and spinning of the wool, as well as the knotting on a flat loom, easily accommodated their daily lives and the burden of the many children they had. The men had to herd and shear the sheep, and sell the surplus carpets at market. The more women in a family, the more carpets were produced, mainly after the spring shearing. The red fields of the carpets, which range from a deep wine red to a red, are decorated with motifs whose design varies according to each tribe. These decorations seem simple but are above all bearers of a very rich symbolism, and take us into an ancestral tribal world, full of charm and warmth. "Each Turkmen tribe has its own gulh. It is round or octagonal in shape and divided into four by thin black lines that form a rectangular grid on the field. The centre of the gulh is decorated with a star motif and each part of the gulh is alternately red and black. Thin diagonal rods called eagles' feet extend from its edge. Within the rectangular mesh of the grid, secondary gulhs alternate with the main ones. The most frequent is a St Andrew's cross pattern, called chemche gulh or spoon gulh. The carpet consists of five rows of gulhs on a red background. A red border with polychrome geometric motifs surrounds the composition. Good condition
