Hereké silk carpet (warp, weft and silk pile with metallic t - Lot 451
Hereké silk carpet (warp, weft and silk pile with metallic threads), Western Turkey, circa 1930 1.60 x 1.10 m AC "Hereke is a small town in Turkey on the shores of the Gulf of Izmit. In 1844, when the Ottomans had to abandon to abandon Egypt, they transferred the large manufacturing trades from Cairo to Hereke. Here, closer to Istanbul, seemed the ideal place to continue Cairo's own textile tradition of superb carpets for the local aristocracy or European ambassadors. Indeed, a year earlier, in 1843, a very large silk mill, the Imperial Silk Factory, was inaugurated in Hereke. From the beginning, the carpets of Hereke were considered prestigious pieces for their fine execution and the quality of the material used, the silk and the precious metal threads. The silk thread used for the entire carpet allowed for exceptional fineness of knotting." This finely knotted carpet is decorated with a polylobed mihrab of a large flowering vase on a tobacco background with polychrome stylized floral decoration. A tobacco border with garlands of flowers surrounds the composition. It is signed in a cartouche Bibliographical reference : Sabahi, T "Splendours of the carpets of the Orient", Atlas edition, p.211.
