Large cabinet with painted and gilded glass, rosewood and bl - Lot 372
Large cabinet with painted and gilded glass, rosewood and blackened wood panels, the front opening to eight drawers and a window revealing four drawers and a secret, the panels decorated with scenes of Greek mythology and Christian history resting on a turned and blackened wood base with a baluster column and a brace bar Italy, Naples, last third of the 17th century. H. 177 cm - W. 147 cm - D. 42 cm Small accidents Bibliographical reference : J. Geyssant, Peintures sous verre de l'Antiquité à nos jours, Paris, 2008. As a decorative technique, painting under glass has been used mainly in Europe since Roman times. The most brilliant illustrations of this skill are to be found in Italy (Naples) and Spain, but also in Bohemia and the Netherlands, in a baroque style until the end of the 17th century, and later in the 18th century in France, England, Switzerland and Bavaria. In the kingdom of Naples, several cabinets on legs were made in the last third of the 17th century; the most illustrious are a pair of cabinets with an architecture similar to the one presented here, with two bodies of drawers on either side of a central panel flanked by two columns (Geyssant, op. cit. p. 56). The name of the famous painter Lucas Giordano (1634-1705) is frequently cited for the most ambitious paintings, but it is known that several painters also distinguished themselves in the technique of painted glass, notably Carlo Garofalo, Andrea Vicenti, Francesco fit Ciccio La Torre and Domenico Coscia. Two paintings dated 1688 and signed by Luca Giordano are known (Palazzo de la Granja); two other plates probably intended to decorate the front of a cabinet illustrating "Jerusalem Delivered" and signed with the monogram VBL (unidentified) are now kept in a private collection. Among the cabinets with paintings under glass, let us mention the one sold at Sotheby's in London on 18 November 2009, lot 322, another one also at Sotheby's in New York on 1 October 2010, lot 25 and a third one at Pandolfini in Florence on 9 November 2016, lot 12. A similar cabinet is now in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, another in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Condition report: Fairly good overall condition with accidents (cracks) to three glass panels (one crack per panel). Minor wear and bumps to the wood in places. The side drawers originally with locks now missing. Wear to the paint and gilding without altering the legibility of the scenes. Very nice piece of furniture in a good state of conservation.
