Rare standard attributed to the 2nd company of the King's bo - Lot 359
Rare standard attributed to the 2nd company of the King's bodyguards or to a cavalry regiment. In green moiré silk, richly embroidered on both sides : a semis of golden fleur-de-lis a border of gold and silver foliage. - In the center, in high relief of the face of Phoebus radiant, surmounted by a banner in silver trimmings embroidered with the motto "NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR" in black cotton thread. Bordered on the four sides of a braid and fringes in gold trimmings. 53 x 50 cm JCD Presented under glass, in a gilded wooden frame, on a wooden pole painted with a fleur-de-lis on a green background, surmounted by a carved wooden fleur-de-lis (posterior). In the state. About 1760. Provenance : HERVE du PENHOAT family. Condition report: Significant missing silk and embroidery in the lower right part. Repairs to the silk in places. The reverse side of the standard has been entirely lined with blue cloth, sewn with thread. A part of this cloth has been cut for the expertise of the object. Wear to the embroidery History: Each company of the King's bodyguards had six standards. These emblems were the color of the company (here green, the 2nd), identical on both sides, and decorated with fringes on all four sides as is the case here. The banner with the royal motto appeared around 1740, so our copy is later than that date. The presence of a fleur-de-lys pattern (as here) or not does not seem to be distinctive. Some cavalry regiments also had this type of standard, without the motto of the owner-colonel of the regiment, like the German Royal. The dimensions correspond to those referenced by Pierre Charrié for the 1750 period (55 x 50 cm). Our flagpole, repainted, takes up the codes in force at the time: it is the color of the background of the standard. Bibliography : Pierre CHARRIE, " Drapeaux et étendards du Roi ", Le Léopard d'or, Paris , 1989. Related works: Standard of the Bodyguards of the 2nd Company "de Villeroy" of the King's Bodyguards (1st French Company). Formerly kept at the Musée de l'Empéri (Brunon collection), now in the collections of the Musée de l'Armée. Reproduced on p.113 of P. Charrié's book. The drawing of Phoebus is very close, with variations in the laurel wreath. This emblem also had a fleur-de-lys seedling which seems to have been voluntarily removed. The documentation of the Musée de l'Empéri has two photographs of a similar standard (kept in a German collection), with a different border decoration, with fleur-de-lis at the corners. It is interesting to note that this banner also has big missing parts in the lower right part. We thank Mr. Jérôme Croyet, doctor of history, for his information.
