Gustave DORE (1832-1883) - Lot 192
Gustave DORE (1832-1883) Illustration for the 'Roland Furieux', circa 1879 Pen and black ink on paper pasted in full on a cardboard, white highlights (oxidized), signed lower right H. 16,8 cm - W. 23 cm HVS Tears and missing on the right edge Preparatory drawing for "Roland Furieux: poème héroïque de l'Arioste" (translation by A.-J. du Pays, Paris, Hachette et Cie, 1879, p. 426): "Then, without turning around any further, she moved away quickly and showed them from afar the shoulders. These, who had come from such distant lands to win the golden shield, having risen up without saying a word, for they had lost their speech with all their boldness, seemed stunned and amazed, and they did not dare raise their eyes to Ullanie" (Song 33, stanza 70). The use of the gillotage technique for the illustration of this work, rather than printing from woodcuts, has allowed the preservation of the artist's drawings. Indeed, gillotage required a version on paper, unlike wood which was directly engraved. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France holds an important set of these drawings for "Roland Furieux" by Gustave Doré (inv. no. RES GR FOL-NFY-21 (2)).
