Token for Charles VIII. - Lot 86
Token for Charles VIII. End of the 15th century. Pierced. A/ KAROLVS : FRACOROM : REX : DALPHINVS : VIANENSIS : G : Shield quartered with 1 and 4 of France, with 2 and 3 of Dauphiné, stamped with two crowns one on each of the cantons of the top of the shield, and accosted by two crowned K. R/ (Couronnelle). GE M'APELLE : A PLESAMCE : POVR : REIOI : SEVX : QVI : M'AIME. (I am called ci plaisance to delight those who love me) Large K surmounted by a fleurdelisé crown, on a field parted, sown on the left with fleurs-de-lis of lilies, on the right of small dolphins. Gilt silver. D. 4,5 cm ES Of the greatest rarity. Only one other example known and preserved at the BNF. We take again here the comment made by J. Roman in Les jetons du Dauphiné published in 1894 This superb coin has already been published and engraved several times, notably in the Trésor de numismatique et de glyptique. The letter G which finishes the legend of the obverse seems to me the initial of the name of the city of Grenoble; if this hypothesis is exact, this token would probably have been struck in the workshop of this city, in 1494, at the time of the passage of Charles VIII going in Italy, according to a use of which one finds other examples in Dauphiné, in Romans and in Vienne ".
