Two miniatures from a Shahnameh - Lot 85
Two miniatures from a Shahnameh Polychrome pigments and gold on paper Iran, 16th-17th century Paintings: H. 24.5 cm W. 16 cm and H. 18 cm W. 14 cm AR The vivid palette of these two miniatures, as well as the size of the figures, may reflect the influence of a manuscript such as the Big Head Shahanama, a copy of the famous epic tale of Firdousi produced in Iran in the late 15th century. This large and beautifully executed manuscript subsequently exerted a definite influence on the artistic productions of the region. The first miniature depicts a bloody battle scene involving the hero Isfandyar. In the upper and lower parts of the miniature, the text on a gold background is spread over four columns, separated by friezes of blue and red scrolls. The whole is framed by polychrome and gold fillets. On the back, the text is spread over four columns of 33 lines, delimited by golden fillets, within a frame of polychrome and gold fillets. The second miniature depicts a discussion between Khosrow and probably Bahram, depicted on their horses in the central part.
