Qadjar muraqqa album - Lot 78
Qadjar muraqqa album Polychrome and gold pigments on paper, lacquered papier-mâché binding Iran, 19th century, Qadjara period H. 27 cm W. 17 cm D The so-called muraqqa albums, which were very popular from the 16th century onwards in the Safavid, Mogul and Ottoman empires, were elaborate compilations of paintings and calligraphy, and could include various works from different periods. This album from the Qajar period comprises 8 pages of calligraphic exercises of poetic texts known as ghazals, with a series of 8 miniatures on the back of each. The paintings, in the Safavid style, depict various scenes, including episodes from epic tales, one of which is of Leila and Majnun. The lacquered papier-mâché binding with polychrome floral decoration and coloured margins are typical of the Qajar period. (In two parts, wear to the binding)
