Emaciated horse - Lot 69
Emaciated horse Polychrome pigments on paper India, probably Deccan, 17th century H. 27 cm - W. 17 cm and H. 14 cm - W. 17 cm AR Two seventeenth-century Deccan miniatures depicting horses with emaciated bodies like this one, but ridden by ascetics, are in the Metropolitan Museum, New york (Inv. 44.154) and the Morgan Library (Ms M.458.30v), and are published in: Haidar N. N. and Sardar M. (2015), Sultans of Deccan India 1500-1700, Opulence and Fantasy, New York: The Metropolitan Museum, pp. 162-163, cat. 73 and 74. The authors refer to other extant miniatures including one in the Cary Welch collection, on marbled paper, depicting a hungry horse without a rider, but attacked by birds. They suggest that these riderless horse images are derived from 15th to 17th century satirical images of a rider with an emaciated mount on the verge of death. (Visible damages and stains)
