REVERSAL OF CHRISTIAN MORAL by the disorders of monasticism. - Lot 194
REVERSAL OF CHRISTIAN MORAL by the disorders of monasticism. Enriched with figures. First [- second] part. They are sold in Holland, by the Merchants Libraires et Imagers, s.d. (ca. 1700). 2 parts of 1 double plate, [4]-19-1bl.-104; 7-1bl. pages and 50 plates in 2 series, bound in 1 volume in-4°, long-grained red morocco, broad gilt lace on boards, richly decorated ribbed spine, inner lace, gilt edges (binding circa 1800). First edition of a pamphlet which remained anonymous and is rightly considered as the most important attack against monks and Jesuits. The success of this caricatural album was immediate. Its illustration includes a double-page frontispiece engraved by Romain de Hooghe showing gold coins dripping from the crucified hands and feet of Christ and 50 fearsome and remarkable grotesque representations of monks, each illustrating a vice, a cardinal sin, a perversion, etc. These 50 portraits are engraved in the black manner in circular medallions and are all accompanied by a humorous quatrain printed in French, in two series each numbered from 1 to 25. They are attributed by Landwher to Cornelis Dusart, pupil of Adrian Van Ostade. (Brunet IV, 1237) (Cohen, 870). A VERY FINE COPY IN DECORATED MOROCCO.
