RAYNAL (GuillaumeThomas). A PHILOSOPHICAL AND POLITICAL HIST - Lot 191
RAYNAL (GuillaumeThomas). A PHILOSOPHICAL AND POLITICAL HISTORY OF THE ESTABLISHMENTS AND TRADE IN THE TWO INDIES. Geneva, Jean Léonard Pellet, 1780. 5 volumes in-4° of [2]-16-741-[1] ; [6]-8-485-[1] ; [2]-15-1-629-[1] ; [6]-8-770-[1]-1bl. ; [4]-28 pages, 50 maps and 23 tables, red morocco, gilt guirlandes on the boards, smooth spine very ornate, gilt edges (period binding). THE MOST COMPLETE EDITION of this epoch-making work which, together with Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality, was at the origin of a profound movement of opinion for the suppression of slavery. To commission this work, Abbé Raynal gathered around him a host of collaborators, all philosophers, d'Holbach, Naigeon and especially Diderot who wrote at least a third of it. The 4 volumes of text are decorated with a portrait of the author drawn by Cochin, and 4 beautiful engravings by Moreau. The fifth and last volume consists of the table of maps, 23 folding tables, 28 pages of brief analysis of the book and 50 double-page or folding maps, drawn by M. Bonne, ingénieur-hydrographe de la Marine, and engraved by André. Soiling on one page of volume 4, rare foxing, spines soiled, one tomatillo piece missing, the copy is in good margins and particularly rare in contemporary morocco. (In French in the text n° 166) (Cohen, 854) (Sabin, 68081). Ex-libris AG Quod Agis.
