[PEYSSONNEL (Charles de). LES NUMEROS. - Lot 183
[PEYSSONNEL (Charles de). LES NUMEROS. Amsterdam and Paris, rue et Hotel Serpente, 1782-83. 3 parts of 214 ; 161 ; 178-[2] pages, bound in 1 small volume in-12, marbled calf, spine with ornamented nerves, red edges (period binding). Forty-three witty and satyrical numbered chronicles on various subjects (the last one on bibliophily), written by Charles de Peyssonnel (1727-1790), who mischievously warns the reader: "I hate the bad faith of all writers, I abhor these seditious pens which want to destroy all temporal powers... I have written freely about the abuses, the vices, the defects and the ridiculousness that have struck me... ». Under number 37 is exposed a project to invade England where it is noted that the wolves were very fond of the flesh of the English. He had thus calculated that a wolf of good appetite ate a man in two days and that it would be necessary only ten thousand wolves to come to end, in less than one year, of seven million English! First edition for the first two parts to which the third and last part was joined in the second edition. It was reprinted under the title "L'antiradoteur ou le petit philosophe moderne" in 1785. One corner slightly dulled, otherwise a very good copy. (Barbier III, 589).
