French school of the late 19th century - Lot 65
French school of the late 19th century Crucifixion Ivory sculpture, assembled arms, cartouche bearing the initials INRI, skull of Golgotha and ivory bones, on a gilded wooden cross H. Christ : 50 x 30 cm (arm span) H. Cross: 80 x 42 cm In a moulded and gilded wooden frame H.: 105 x 84 cm Good general condition, dirt, small accidents to the frame S&C This large crucifixion shows Christ on his cross just before being wounded by the spear of the centurion Longinus. Still alive and afflicted, he turns his gaze to his Father one last time, his mouth open, in his last breath. His body is tense, accentuated by the veins in his arms and the thinness of his chest. His perizonium with its many folds is held in place by a rope. Above it is written in a cartouche his acronym INRI (Jesu s Nazarenus, Rex Jvdæorum). At his feet are the bones of Adam in reference to his death on Mount Golgotha, thus giving all its typological value to Christ the Redeemer considered as the new Adam come on earth to redeem his sins. This devotional object, inspired by a 17th century French model, bears witness to this example of atonement offered to the faithful over time.
