BURMA / CHINA - Lot 14
BURMA / CHINA Ceramic jar called "Martaban". Ceramic with moulded decoration Burma or China, 19th century or earlier H. 50 cm AR Large ceramic jar with brown glaze, and moulded decoration of floral motifs on the body, with interlacing friezes and small handles applied in volutes at the base of the neck. The origin of this type of jar has long been discussed by historians. Some claim that they were produced in Martaban, Burma, as there were many examples there. A second theory is that the Burmese port had a key role in the export of Chinese ceramics to Europe, but that they were not directly produced there. However, it has recently been established that Martaban has had its own ceramics production since the 7th century.
