Pierre THEVENIN (1905 - 1950) - Lot 439
Pierre THEVENIN (1905 - 1950) Portrait of a man in a bust. Oil on paper. Studio stamp on the back. 32 x 24 cm. Born in Gray on March 9, 1905 into a family of musicians, Thevenin studied at the Lyon Conservatory and in 1923 obtained a first prize in cello. A half self-taught painter, he exhibited at the Salon du Sud-est in 1928 while continuing his career as a musician. From 1932 onwards, his contracts as a cellist in the orchestras of the great ocean liners obliged him to travel the world. From these numerous voyages (Italy, Morocco, Africa, South-East Asia) he brought back, as any "painter-traveller", pochades, sketches but also more accomplished works where the variety of landscapes and types seen here and there is declined with surprising ease. Back in Lyon in 1936, where he settled more permanently, he continued his career as a musician with the Lyon National Radio Broadcasting Orchestra but left a few years later to devote himself more fully to his work as a painter. Tempted by mural painting, he was entrusted by the State with a vast decoration for the grand staircase of the University's Museum of Mouldings where, through five large compositions, he willingly gave in to the themes of the times; however, it was towards a more intimate painting that he would evolve: portraits, landscapes where sometimes a fullness of line and colour is seen, allowing the influence of a Jean Puy to shine through.
