[THE FOUNTAIN - SIMON & COINY]. Figures from La Fontaine's Fables engraved by Simon and Coiny. In Paris, Chez Simon & Coigny, engravers, n.d. [circa 1787]. 2 volumes in-8° [142 x 215 mm] (including one for the plates), burgundy morocco, fillets, fine serrated wheels and gilt animal lace framing the plates, animal finial at the corners, spine ribbed with the same decoration, gilt edges, blue moire guards, covers of some preserved deliveries, common case (Thierry). Entirely tabbed structure. ALL FIRST PRINTING, IN-8° FORMAT, which was interrupted and OF WHICH ONLY SOME EXAMPLES WERE PRINTED. This print run was stopped at the end of the first volume of text (76 pp.) and after the 137th plate of the third volume of this edition, which was to contain six. Six titles, a frontispiece and 137 figures out of text, drawn by VIVIER, the whole "engraved [on] Dutch paper" by SIMON & COINY. Volume I: 76 pp. of text and 45 plates. Volume II : 50 + 42 plates. Most of this edition was then printed in six volumes of in-18 format, by Didot the Elder, in 1787, and illustrated with 274 figures. From the Eugène Vincent and W. libraries. Vincens-Bouguereau, with ex-libris. Cohen, 553-554 ("The text was to be entirely engraved, but we stopped after the first Fables"); Rochambeau, 131 ("Beautiful edition [] A few leaves had been engraved in small in-8° format, the editors did not continue the work and simply typographed the text by reducing it to in-18").
