VIGENERE (Blaise de) - PHILOSTRATE. Pictures or platte paint - Lot 99
VIGENERE (Blaise de) - PHILOSTRATE. Pictures or platte paintings of the two Greek sophist Philostrates and the statues of Callistrate. Mise en françois by Blaise de Vigenère Bourbonnois and enriched with arguments and annotations. Paris, widow Abel L'Angelier & widow M. Guillemot, 1615. Strong in folio of [18]- 919 [badly ciphered]-47-2bl. pages, light calf, spine with nerves decorated (back binding). Philostratus informs us that his work is the description of a collection of paintings that he would have seen in Naples, it is one of the first art critics consequently. First illustrated edition, whose copies bear the dates 1614 or 1615 indifferently; it is adorned with an engraved title and 68 superb full-page engravings executed by Léonard Gautier and Thomas de Leu after the drawings of Antoine Caron and Jaspar Isaac with epigrams by Artus Thomas Sieur d'Embry. Remarkable translation by Blaise de Vigenère, born in Saint Pourcain sur Sioule and widely commented, it is the basis of a large number of editions. Title reassembled and lined with small lacks in the margin of the background, old restorations well executed at the hinges and the corner of some leaves.
