ANSWERPHONE (Humphry). Observations on the theory and practi - Lot 87
ANSWERPHONE (Humphry). Observations on the theory and practice of landscape gardening, including some remarks on Grecian abd gothic architecture. London, Bensley for Taylor, 1805. Large in-4°, tobacco calf, rectangle formed of cold crosses, wide golden lace framing the dishes, very ornate back, marbled edges (L. Leeming in Lancaster). Second edition identical to the first edition of 1803. It is the most famous work on the art of English gardens by the theorist Humphrey Repton (1752-1818), considered the greatest English landscape architect of his time and responsible for designing the plans of the greatest British mansions and castles. The book is illustrated with the author's portrait in aquatint on the frontispiece, 27 plates (1 double and 1 folding) out of text, 12 in colour (9 with moving parts, 10 aquatints in black (3 with moving parts and 5 engraved plates), 11 aquatint vignettes in text (2 with moving parts), and 19 woodcut vignettes, the last one coloured. The particularity that makes this work astonishing is the fact that 14 compositions (12 plates and 2 headings) have movable elements allowing to see the landscape before and after the transformations proposed by the architect; he is one of the first to use this method of illustration. The binding is slightly veiled and restored at the hinges, with wide margins. Armorial bookplate of the author on a guard.
