PLACE (Victor). Nineveh and Assyria. Work published on the o - Lot 85
PLACE (Victor). Nineveh and Assyria. Work published on the orders of the Emperor, with restoration essays by Felix Thomas. Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, 1867-1870. 2 volumes grand in-folio, half red morocco with corners, spine with nerves, gilt t. (Petit, succ. de Simier). In 1852, the French government resolved to undertake further research in Assyria. It commissioned Victor Place, consul in Mosul, to continue the excavations of P.E. Botta in Khorsabad with the help of Gabriel Tranchard and the architect and draftsman Felix Thomas; they brought to light important remains of the palace of the Assyrian King Sargon II. Unfortunately, in 1855, the ship that carried the remains and documents of this discovery to France was sunk by looters. The results of this richly illustrated work were published in only one hundred copies and constitute, in fact, today the only evidence of these discoveries. Volume 1 of text (out of 2) and 1 volume of a rarely complete atlas of the 87 plates, including a map of Assyria, line engraved in heliogravure, of which 16 were finely coloured at the time and 10 on double page. Bindings slightly dusty, corners a little worn. (Vicar VI, 698).
