HEILLY (Georges d') [pseud. of Ed. Poinsot]. Extraction of t - Lot 56
HEILLY (Georges d') [pseud. of Ed. Poinsot]. Extraction of the royal coffins at Saint-Denis in 1793. Paris, Hachette, 1868. In-12 of |6]-248 pages, garnet morocco, dishes decorated at the Du Seuil, with gilded arms in the center, spine with fleurdelisé ribs, gilded inner lace, gilded edges (Petit, succ. de Simier). A work in which we find the most singular details, it was made with the help of precious notes taken by a religious of Saint-Denis, an eyewitness to the extractions of the royal coffins. "The coffin of Louis XV was only opened in the cemetery, on the edge of the grave. The body, well wrapped in cloths, appeared whole; but free of everything around it... there came out an odor so foul that it was not possible to remain present. Powder was burned, several shots were fired to purify the air, and the sad remains were quickly thrown into the pit on a bed of lime... ". SUPERB SPECIMEN WITH THE WEAPONS OF HENRI, COUNT DE CHAMBORD (1820-1883). (O.H.R. pl. 2500).
