GUIGNES (Ch. Louis-Joseph de). Trips to Peking, Manila and the Ile de France made between 1784 and 1801. Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, 1808. 3 volumes in-8 of [4]-63-439; [2]-476; [2]-488 pages, half fawn calf of the time, smooth spine and 1 atlas in folio, pink cardboard of the publisher. Magnificently illustrated first edition on China and the Philippines by the sinologist and lexicographer Chrétien-Louis-Joseph de Guignes, French consul who stayed 17 years in Canton. This captivating travel story relates his experiences in China, with illustrations based on sketches he made on the spot. The atlas is composed of 97 plates (genre scenes, views of towns and villages, costumes,...) including a Chinese music plate and 6 large maps (Map of China in 2 segments, Map of Macau, Port of Macau, Map of the Philippines, Bay of Manila). Slight skin at the bottom of 2 dishes, the atlas is in a rare state of interior freshness. (Cordier Sinica, 2351 - Chadenat, 590).
