ARMOIRE - Lot 201
ARMOIRE A two parts walnut molded and carved in low and high relief with four leaves and two drawers, decorated with an architectural front with broken pediment and dragons, lion's heads, military trophies, scrolls and masks, the central pilaster with lion's head surmounted by a bust of a winged child, the low panels with stylized scrolls ; the entablature with a frieze of stylized palmettes resting on uprights with satyr heads, masks and military trophies. Probably Lyon, late 16th - early 17th century H. 205 cm - W. 178 cm - D. 60 cm Restorations and missing parts PFD Although the structures of the double-barrelled cupboards made in Lyon from the 16th century onwards are generally inspired by the engravings of Jacques Androuet du Cerceau (1515-1585), the sources of the decorative repertoire are to be found in Italy. One finds on this piece of furniture panels representing architectures typical of Florence cabinets as well as trophies of arms evoking the engravings of Aeneas Vico (1523-1567). A panel depicting similar trophies of arms is now in the Musée d'Ecouen. A similar decoration can also be seen on an engraving by du Cerceau depicting a dresser (J. Thirion, Le Mobilier du moyen-âge et de la Renaissance en France, Dijon, 1998, p. 173).
