This work, remarkably carved in the thickness of a rectangular ivory plate, represents the scene of the death of Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552). A pioneering missionary in Asia, this co-founder of the Jesuit Order with St. Ignatius of Loyola set out to evangelize the Far East in his final years. He disembarked in Goa in 1541 and travelled to Japan, but fell ill and died in 1552 on the island of Sancian off the coast of China. His relics were stolen by the Jesuits in 1554, then exhibited in the chapel of Bom Jesù in their church built in Goa between 1594 and 1606. As the spearhead of the Jesuit Order, which promoted, in the post-Tridentine context, the educational role of images for the faithful and the dissemination of the lives of contemporary saints, Francis Xavier became a subject of inspiration for many painters from the time of his canonization in 1622 (cf. Poussin, Saint Francis Xavier Recalling to Life the Daughter of an Inhabitant of Kagoshima in Japan, 1641 - Oil on canvas, H.4.44 m.; W. 2.34 m., Paris, Musée du Louvre, n°inv. INV. The artists were inspired by the event narrated by Daniello Bartolo in the Istoria della Campagnia di Gesu. Our work derives directly from a painting by the artist Giovan Battista Gaulli, known as "il Baciccio" (1639 - 1709) for the church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale in Rome, a major architectural work by Bernini built between 1658 and 1678. Oratory of the Jesuit novitiate, the church includes six side chapels, one of which is dedicated to Francis Xavier (1506-1552). Its decoration is made by Gaulli and the sc
