Jean GAUTHERIN (1840-1890) - Lot 340
Jean GAUTHERIN (1840-1890) Allegory of the Cloth Industry or The Spinner Before 1878 Preparatory sketch in wax, signed on the base H. 47,5 cm AL-EJ Accidents and failures After training at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, with the sculptors Charles Gumery and Auguste Dumont, he exhibited at the Salon from 1865. The artist, although little known, marks the Parisian landscape with his creations. He responds to many important public commissions. This wax sketch is a first step towards the creation of a 2.40 meter sculpture representing the Fabric Industry. The work was installed on the Palais du Trocadéro by the architect Davioud in 1878. It surmounted the central part of the palace, known as the Terrace of Statues. About thirty sculptures adorned the upper terrace with allegories of science, art and industry. Gautherin's sculpture was deposited in Mayenne in 1936, where it was broken by accident in 1992. This sketch is interesting from an artistic point of view; it is a witness to a stage in the artist's creative process. Moreover, it is a rare document testifying to what the Palais du Trocadéro was like during the Universal Exhibition of 1878.
