Straight embroidered vest with a rare decoration on the them - Lot 294
Straight embroidered vest with a rare decoration on the theme of ferocious beasts killing men, probably The Beast of Gévaudan, end of the 18th century, Straight-necked cardigan with straight collar and small lapels in cream silk satin brightly embroidered polychrome silk with a flat background mainly of a sowing of feathers and barbels on the full and sheaves of umbelliferous flowers, palms and roses cut along the buttonhole; coordinated pocket tabs with fruit and architectural decoration. At the bottom, an unexpected decoration presents on a green terrace a man in a suit struck down by a monstrous beast. The Beast of Gévaudan, to which eighty-eight to one hundred and twenty-four victims are attributed between 1764 and 1767, occupied the minds of many people for a long time, giving rise to numerous fantasies and an iconography as abundant as it is terrifying. This embroidered vest was never mounted; it is possible that the author of the embroidery did not achieve the commercial success he had hoped for, or that the sponsor gave up the idea of wearing it in society. Old handwritten indications on a small sewn playing card, (right side slightly yellowed), 71 x 55 cm.
