Les Zones terrestres, part of the panoramic scenery, Zuber m - Lot 77
Les Zones terrestres, part of the panoramic scenery, Zuber manufacture, edition circa 1930, polychrome printing which required 2050 plates partly destroyed during the second world war. Drawing by E. Erhmann with the assistance of T. Schuler for some animals; first edition in 1855 rewarded with a medal of honour at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Copy including strips 20 to 31 of the decoration, i.e. Bengal and Canada, (a few chemical stains due to pigments that are reputed to disappear when applied and tears), 367 x 57 cm. The Terrestrial Zones proposes an ideal world tour in a grandiose nature as described by the rapporteur of the jury of the 1855 Exhibition: "from the burning sky and the luxuriant vegetation of the tropics, we are transplanted to the lush mountains of Switzerland, enlivened by rustic chalets and criss-crossed by beautiful herds... at a short distance, the artist confronts us with the cold splendour of the icy sea.". Bible: Nouvel Kammerer (O.) Panoramic wallpapers, Flammarion, Paris 1980; cat no. 84.
