Model of the galley la Réale in painted wood, sails and text - Lot 229
Model of the galley la Réale in painted wood, sails and textile rigging in cotton. Very faithful realization, colors, fittings, rigging, according to the plans published by the Musée de la Marine. Mid 20th century. Model: H. 45 cm - W. 82 cm Showcase: H. 57 cm - W. 94 cm - D. 34 cm BP La Réale, with 33 and 34 oars on board and 6 or 7 oarsmen per row, had on board a crew of more than 600 oarsmen, counting those kept "in reserve" in the steerage. To this was added a guard of 100 men, about 20 gunners, about 50 sailors, not counting officers and lackeys. In all, nearly 800 men found a place on this monster, which was more than 65 metres long and 12 metres wide. The reale carried six hunting guns in the bow and two in the stern. It was more of a parade ship than a warship. The oars are tightened for transport, the showcase is uncovered by two screws.
