[LA FONTAINE - SIMON & COINY]. - Lot 54
[LA FONTAINE - SIMON & COINY]. Figures from La Fontaine's Fables engraved by Simon and Coiny. In Paris, Chez Simon & Coigny, Graveurs, n. d. [circa 1787]. In-8° [142 x 215 mm], green half-basane, smooth decorated spine (early 19th c. binding). ALL FIRST PRINTING, IN-8° FORMAT, which was interrupted and OF WHICH ONLY SOME EXAMPLES WERE PRINTED. This print was stopped at the end of the first volume of text (76 pp.) and after the 137th plate of the third volume of this edition, which was to contain six. This copy consisted of a title and 42 figures, drawn by VIVIER, the whole "engraved [... on] Dutch paper" by SIMON & COINY. Volume I alone. Most of the print run of this edition was then printed in six volumes of in-18 format, by Didot l'aîné, in 1787, and illustrated with 274 figures. A few slight freckles. Cohen, 553-554 ("The text was to be entirely engraved, but we stopped after the first Fables"); Rochambeau, 131 ("Beautiful edition [...] A few leaves had been engraved in small in-8° format, the editors did not continue the work and were satisfied with typographing the text by reducing it to in-18").
