Canari, Francesco di Sisco. - Lot 330
(title and preface), 308, 1 table ff. and 260 p., 1 table ff. for volume I ( Liber primus et liber secundus); 2 ff. n. c. (title and white leaflet), 301 p., 174 p., 2 table editions, brown basane of the time with gaps, red slices. Ex libris in the form of a signature (probably A. Pietri). The manuscript in Latin is presented in a tight and regular handwriting on laid paper. It is divided into four parts: 1: Situ et qualitalibus; 2: De dominio Serenissima Reipublice; 3: De religione et moribus; 4: De viris illustribus et venerabilis religiosis. The work is very structured, with many subtitles, and enriched with numerous references to other authors: Ptolemy, Seneca, Mercator, Cluverius, Filippini...in the situ part, note the paragraphs devoted to the towers, turribus, with the establishment of a list, the saltworks, salinis, baths, balneis, melle, minerals. This is followed by a description of each region. The text is perfectly organized and its approach deserves to be cross-checked with other publications. Antonio Buttafoco left us other transcriptions of great texts, such as the Chronicles. We are most likely here in the presence of a copy of the manuscript which was held by Giovan Carlo Gregori and of which we had lost track. On this question one can refer to Antoine Franzini's work, L'Accademia dei vagabondi..., and among others to notes 57 and 62. Flori, 12182, quotes the author for another title.
