PAIRE DE BOUCLES D’OREILLES SARMATES ORNÉES... - Lot 6 - De Baecque et Associés
PAIRE DE BOUCLES D’OREILLES SARMATES ORNÉES DE PENDENTIFS EN FORME D’AMPHORE ET DE PERLES DE CORNALINE Ier-IIe siècle ap. J.-C.
Poids brut : 24,4 gr.
d’or.
A pair of Sarmatian gold earrings with amphora drop
pendants with spherical carnelian beads
1st century AD
Weight: 24,4 g.
The earrings have simple hoops of tapered wire. From each
hangs an amphora pen-dant, a carnelian bead forming its
spherical body. The upper and lower parts of the amphora
are in sheet gold. To the neck of each amphora are
attached four handles in twisted square wire from which
hang loop- in-loop chain drops with gold sphere pendants.
Each amphora has a cylindrical foot with plain wire
borders.
Amphora earrings have a long history in the Greek world
and must have had Di-onysian symbolism. They seem to
have been popular in the Sarmatian areas in the 1st to 2nd
century AD. Close to the present earrings is a pair from a
burial at Zavet-noe, Ukra
