Washi cloak, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912) Paper made of long mulberry fibers (Broussonetia papyrifera) dyed with persimmon extract L. 154 cm l. 150cm Provenance: Private collection, New Caledonia Traditionally tied around the neck and worn over the shoulders, this cape was intended to protect from the rain. Made of washi paper, listed as an intangible heritage of humanity since 2014, on its back is inscribed the word "Torii" indicating the place, and "goshu", the prefecture of Shiga, near the ancient imperial city of Kyoto. On the last line is written kamu-you followed by maruta-ya, indicating the feudal house to which the person (Yataro) belonged. Thus the places of life of the person to whom he belonged were attached. Square shaped, the circumference of the cloak is deep black framing the orange square on which two inscriptions appear on two ends. Japanese style.
