*Baule statue, Ivory Coast Wood, beads,... - Lot 159 - De Baecque et Associés
*Baule statue, Ivory Coast Wood, beads, vegetable fibers H. 42 cm Provenance : Swiss private collection Celebrated, recognized, and elevated to the rank of the most appreciated works of art in the West, Baule statuary has conquered the aesthetes of the world for the symbolism of honored femininity, for the peaceful concentration, introspective reflection, and delicacy that it conveys. This statuette, by the refinement of its modelling, the delicacy of its features, the delicacy of its ornamentation and its multiple scarifications, bears superb witness to this inescapable African sculptural tradition. Its graceful forms and the gestures of the hands positioned on the belly are typical and classic characteristics. The stretched, wrinkled eyes are framed by a tense arch, intensifying the gaze and its force of interiority, suggesting calm and tranquility. Between the two superciliary arches drawn in a circular arc, a scarification in relief appears in the center. The mouth with thin lips revealing a smile, modestly sketched. The stable and serene posture is reinforced by the position of the arms glued against her body, her shoulders and her back straight, by her long neck sublimated by small square scarifications in frieze. A subtle rhythm animates her abdomen, rendered by a long zigzag scarification in relief. Beyond their aesthetic qualities, this type of statuette was also used to represent the spirits called usu who populate the Baule universe. They were thus the object of individual devotions. This lot is a temporary import and is subject to a 5.5% buyer's fee in addition to the selling price and the auction price.
