*Two ivi po'o, Marquesas Islands, French... - Lot 98 - De Baecque et Associés
*Two ivi po'o, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia Bones H. 4 cm and 3,6 cm Provenance: The larger: Roger Budin Collection, Koller sale, Geneva, May 20, 2014, lot 10. Both: Private collection, Switzerland In the Marquesas Islands, the image of the Tiki, the primordial ancestor of Man, is found on the ornamentation of many objects. In particular, on the ivi po'o, ornaments carved in marine bone representing the bust and head of the ancestor. Our two effigies are carved according to the classical canons. The head, imposing, asserts its presence by an extreme stylization of the features: large circular eyes, a nose with flared nostrils, a mouth stretching across the entire width of the face. The ears, treated in the form of volutes, are sculpted on the sides, almost to the back of the head. The trunk, with condensed volumes, offers square shoulders, short arms bent at right angles, extended by fan-shaped hands brought back to the umbilical zone. The rear parts of our figures are treated differently; one has engraved ornamental motifs, the second is delicately decorated with a face with sketched features. The ivi po'o were traditionally worn around the neck or used as hair ornaments by men, who kept two long strands of hair to insert into the hole, the rest of the head being shaved. This lot is a temporary import and is subject to a 5.5% buyer's fee in addition to the selling expenses and the hammer price.
