Tapa Siapo Elei of the Lava type Archipelago of Samoa Liber beaten of paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) dyes of vegetable origin. First half of the XXth century L. 152 cm l. 147 cm Provenance : Former American collection, acquired by the present owner Private collection, New Caledonia The engraved plate, called upeti, has been transferred to this bark cloth eight times, as indicated on the back by the raised patterns left by the stamping die. Only the front side shows some of these patterns highlighted. The square tapa has a regular geometric composition divided into four parts within which appear rhombuses whose edges are decorated with triangular friezes, and the interior magnified by a flower. Beautiful tones preserved, of red, orange browns rendered by the vegetable dyes.
