Mumuye mask, Nigeria Wood H. 23 cm Provenance... - Lot 85 - De Baecque et Associés
Mumuye mask, Nigeria Wood H. 23 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). Female mumuye mask, stylistically similar to the one published by Jacques Kerchache, Jean-Louis Paudrat, and Lucien Stephan in 1988, p. 126, L'art africain. The face, projected horizontally, is composed of two distinct parts, on the front, the face enhanced with red pigments, from which a long rectangular mouth emerges, large round cavities signifying and intensifying the range of the eyes, of the gaze, and a fine median nasal ridge running in relief across the whole on either side. Then follows the long headdress stretched backwards.
