Double-edged axe, Papua New Guinea Wood,... - Lot 83 - De Baecque et Associés
Double-edged axe, Papua New Guinea Wood, metal, fabric, vegetable fibers L. 57,5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland As rare as it is elegant and sophisticated, this double-edged axe bears witness to the stylistic audacity and originality of its sculptor through the use of two distinct materials for its blades, metal and stone. A long time is required to polish a large Ormu Wari axe blade, to make it perfectly regular, smooth and shiny. It becomes extremely shiny, thanks to the care given to it with animal oil. Thus transformed and cut, it represents one of the distinctive signs used by the elites of the north coast to display their hereditary status. The green color of this blade, renamed ye-yao, indicates that it was made in the upper Awigobi valley, where green rock quarries are exploited in the mountains and slabs can also be picked up from the riverbed. A rich woven structure, based on plant fibers, with a darker patina in places, attesting to its use, links this blade to the wooden one. Nice and rare example. This lot is temporarily imported and subject to a 5,5% buyer's fee in addition to the selling price.
