*Slotted drum, Lobala, Democratic Republic... - Lot 81 - De Baecque et Associés
*Slotted drum, Lobala, Democratic Republic of Congo H. 65 cm W. 201 cm D. 52 cm Provenance: Private collection, Belgium Private collection, Switzerland Monumental monoxyle and zoomorphic slit drum from the southern Ubangi region. Taking the form of a stylized buffalo, this lobala drum was reserved for the use of the chief, allowing him to transmit coded messages over long distances. It also gave rhythm to dances and ritual ceremonies. Inscribed in a curved structure, the animal with its rounded body springs up, its hollowed out belly constituting the sound box, is carried by arched legs on which appear a series of circular incised shapes. The perimeter of the back is sublimated by an engraved frieze of triangular geometric motifs. Extending the line drawn at the top by the slit, the neck-head and tail are projected into space in filiform volumes. For similar examples, that of the former collection of Paolo Morigi, that of the former collection of Pierre Dartevelle published Dartevelle, and for the most accomplished example of the type, preserved in the Louvre Museum, Palais des Cessions (inv. M.H. 96.28.72). The lot is temporarily imported and subject to a 5.5% fee payable by the buyer in addition to the sale costs and the hammer price.
